I haven't done anything special; when my Mom and Gran moved in with be back in 1999 due to failing health, I caught as many of Mom's pond fish as I could and put them in my tropical 6ft tank. Sadly, Goldie ate most of my tropical fish (live and learn!) and all the others have since died several years back, but Goldie soldiers on! I keep thinking about getting him some more friends, but he is pretty big and would probably eat them! He has a tumor on his tail and cateracts now, bless him, but he is happy and has survived both Turbo and Diesel as kittens chasing him around the tank from the outside, and more recently, Princess ;D

Spencer, an 18 YEAR OLD GOLDFISH??
Is it one of those great huge things that never move?
The oldest gold fish I've ever had died at the end of last year. It was a white/silver fantail - nothing fancy. I bought it as a tiny fish and it got quite big for a fantail, and would have been around 7 when it died.
Note: Sorry, I didn't notice there were further posts about this fish and a picture. I can't see the picture at present for some reason, so will try again another day.
