POSTED ON BEHALF OF HOPE RESCUE
Toby is an 2 year old labrador cross collie and is currently on foster in Cardiff.
The Toby Fact File
Dog status: Good
Cat status: Will chase, not to be rehomed with cats or livestock
Child status: Good, can be rehomed with children aged 6/7 years plus who are used to bouncy dogs who like to lick faces!
House training: Perfect
Home alone: Would not suit a full time worker
Basic training: Has lovely manners in the house and is working on the basic commands with his foster family
Toby is a mix of two of the most popular breeds in the UK and he has taken on all the good points of both breeds. We believe he is a labrador cross collie (we do not know for sure as he was picked up as a stray). Like a lab he is loving and loyal and soft as butter with people. He loves company and is good with children and adults alike. Toby has taken the collie's love of play and intelligent, quick mind. He is an active dog who loves a good blast off the lead.
Toby has the collie drive to herd and chase and this shows around small animals so we will not rehome him with cats. Care would also have to be taken around livestock, particularly sheep. His herding drive can be channelled through play, giving him an outlet for the desire and teaching self control behaviours. He would be absolutely ideal for a sport such as agility or flyball.
Toby is good with other dogs he meets out and about on his walks. If they are running off the lead he can go into herding patterns and chase. Sometimes if he cannot go in to that pattern he can become frustrated and stressed and barked at other dogs. His recall is being bombproofed by his foster family to ensure he can be called away if things are getting too exciting in the park!
He is an active dog and loves a good run, he will need a new home where he can get plenty of varied walks to see the sights of the world. He loves to be out and about and loves swimming. Ideally he would be looking for a new owner with a secure garden with high fencing where he can have a bounce about with his ball.
Toby is good with children and can be rehomed with children aged 6/7 years plus. However, they would have to be used to large dogs as he can be boisterous when out of the house and he does jump up which is something his foster family are working on. He has shown great improvements but could knock smaller children over or give them a good wash behing the ears which they may not appreciate!
Toby has been happy to be left for a couple of hours but he does need access to things of his own that he can chew such as an activity toy with food in or strong chew toys. He likes to use his mouth when he is bored (must be the labrador in him :. He does love company and would not be suitable for a full time worker but could suit someone who works part time or for someone who is home all day.
Toby is strong on the lead when he goes out for a walk and his foster home are working on loose lead walking techniques with him which would need to contiunue in a new home. He also needs work on his recall as he has just had a name change and is exciteable outdoors. Care would have to be taken in a new home letting him off lead until he settles and has bonded with his new owners.
Toby would be best suited with someone who has owned a dog before due to his need for some training tweaks.
All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated and microchipped prior to rehoming. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family.
